Roads That Cross: Dark/Light

I HATE the dark! (Unless, it’s candle lit, unless it’s watching shooting stars at the beach, unless there is a small nightlight of a lamp) Some of you may remember I am afraid of the dark. My hands have slipped off the keys into a dark abyss :(.

Just a thought, I put conditions on my darkness, I’m afraid unless. . . . I don’t put conditions on the daylight: I won’t get up unless the sun shines! I won’t run errands unless it’s a cloudless day. I won’t work in my garden unless there is a breeze.

God created both night and day and said they were good. I’m living out of fear in the night, and claiming Truth in the daylight. I’m convicted, God and I have some work to do.

God in His mercy and extravagant grace, struck a match into my darkness: the visit of a friend yesterday, joy on a daughter’s face, ice water in the middle of the night, and this song by Josh Wilson (Matthew West helped him finish it!!!). If you really want a treat, at the ends, click the link bottom left and see him sing it live on KLove :} :

You have your own darkness. Either you are in it, traveling out of it or heading into a place of “one million why you should not even try” “shadows here feeding on your fears”. . .

“Don’t under estimate the God you follow”. . . “Don’t lose heart”. . . “Keep on pushing back the dark!!!”

Matthew 5:15
New American Standard Bible
nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

New American Standard Bible
The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.

  1. Tracey, I am blessed you chose the video I made to Josh Wilson’s song, Pushing Back the Dark, to share on your blog. I made the video last spring when I was in a very difficult season battling chronic pain and another setback in my 4+ year healing journey from a work injury. I sense you know of this battle with the dark too. Praying for you, and all of us, to not lose heart, and to keep pushing back the dark!

    • Hi Linda, thk u for visiting and commenting πŸ™‚ Glad to hear God is transitioning you into a new season. May He color outside the lines of your life! twe

  2. Hi beautiful (Bucky’s Angel),

Happy Birthday to a wonderful lady, God’s child. I thought I had posted this yesterday. While reading more posts today, I discovered mine was not there – I’m a bit goofy. Your words give me strength, Tracy, as I’m sure you have the same impact on many others. Thank you πŸ™‚

    Much Love, Bill

  3. Happy birthday Tracey (one day late)! We are so grateful for the good carpool times over the years with you, Bucky, and your kids. We think of you often.

  5. Tracey,
This is a first for me, responding to a blog. I see I missed your birthday, we are both Scorpio’s. Yea us!!! It was great to see you on the walk and meet with your family. Ashley is a woman! Claudia and I (High School friend) haven’t seen each other in years. There were other friends in other groups that I ran into as well. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of something larger than us all.
I know travel is hard but I would love to invite you and your family to an event:
This is a burn notice! If you find yourself waking from a nap after THE MEAL after the GAME. And the question arises, “What can I do to burn off a few pounds and wake up?” The Garcia’s have an invitation for you! Bring old bank statements, rags, wieners, smores, or even cold covered buns (?). We will be hosting a bonfire Thanksgiving night. We do this every Thanksgiving so the invitation is ongoing. We start at dusk. If you do not find us in the house, walk toward the river and follow the noise or the lit night. All are welcome, all are welcome in this place!
    > Caesar (Chief Pyro tech of event) & Jeanne (Chief Gatherer for Pyro)

    • Tracey, I wrote Ashley instead of Ashlyn in my reply. I wish I could blame it on a key stroke. I bought Ginko to help my memory but I guess I forget to take it.

  9. It’s your birthday! It’s the day God said, “Here comes My daughter of ‘Kingdom Play.'” πŸ™‚ I love that you are pushing through all your challenges and I want to bless you in some way on this day. How about this Ann Voskamp quote? “In the beginning, our God spoke beauty because He is Beauty and the God of the Bible is an artist and what you must never forget is that you are His art. Touch your face right now and feel what you really are, what His Son whispers, β€œMy masterpiece worth dying for, my beauty worth redeeming.” Know you are loved! Vicky B.

  10. Happy Birthday Mrs. Tracey!! I hope you have a wonderful day! I am so sorry to have lost touch with you since moving to New Orleans. But I can promise you I think about you and your family often. Especially since I became a mom 4 months ago to a precious little girl named Adelyn. I have such fond memories of time I spent with your girls. I am so thankful to have been a part of their lives and to have you to look up to as a role model mother of 4 girls. As I look at my sweet little baby girl and try to wrap my head around the fact that she’s all ours to raise, I often think of you and your unconditional love, compassion, thoughtfulness, devotion, and patience with your girls. You are truly an inspiration to me every day. I hope and pray that I can be as great at being a mom as you are and I hope that Adelyn grows into a well-rounded, polite, sincere, smart, beautiful christian girl like your girls. I would love to visit you next time I’m in Baton Rouge so that Adelyn can meet you. I hope you have an amazing birthday!

  40. Tracey,
I recently stopped Bucky to express a thought about you. He encouraged me to share it with you. In August, at Dunham’s Back to School Night, I wanted to approach you and tell you how pretty you looked in your purple outfit. I never had the chance, as at every break in the evening, you were surrounded by friends hugging you.
The reason that your purple attire stood out to me is because I was reminded of my paternal grandmother. Maggi Green was a truly inspiring character. The child of a logging camp superintendent who was born in a railcar converted into a home, Maggi was never formally educated beyond the sixth grade. She was embarrassed by this, so she read constantly and educated herself. She became a published poet and had that rare ability to converse with and charm either pauper or potentate. She had a great confidence and a somewhat defiant spirit.
Her favorite poem was “Warning”, by Jenny Joseph.
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
    And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Tracey, express yourself, especially today. Happy birthday.

  41. Tracey,
May you have a glorious birthday today as you feel, see and savor each moment of God’s presence and peace. Happy, happy day!

  49. I just wanted to wish you a very happy birthday! You won’t know me, my children have been patients of your husbands for almost 16 years; I also used to work for Craig Alberty and Dr. Elofson and I felt awkward together at Craig’s daughter’s wedding ;). So that’s how I know of you. It is so sweet and so amazing to hear your husband speak your praises every time I ask how you’re doing. He is so proud of your courage and strength. He seems awed by your hopefulness. My sister is in a phd program at LSU and she wants some of her focus to be als; I have told her of you. You are touching more lives than you know! My kids and I pray for you daily; please be encouraged and celebrate another other year with your family. I wish you a very happy birthday!

  50. Tracey, I want to wish you a great birthday. I’m looking forward to seeing you this weekend and taking photos of your beautiful girl. Best always, Susan McManus

    Your “Pooh”

  54. Happy Birthday, Tracey! You inspire me and touch more lives than you can possibly know. My day is always made brighter when I receive one of your posts. Thanks for your continuing work and best wishes for a beautiful day.

  55. I’m happy on a bright sunny day and not when it’s dark from rain or dark clouds. But our Father has plans for this darkness, and we have to allow it in our life for growing closer to Him…which is hard. And I don’t like the pain of His molding me. Thank you for these words today! Sometimes I forget that He is in the dark with me….usually holding me because I cannot stand.

Tracey I wish you the brightest of birthdays today!!! When I think of your light for Jesus, I think of a flame thrower…it doesn’t miss it’s target and instantly the entire area is brightly lit up and Jesus in you never misses influencing the world around you. Baton Rouge is Brighter because we have you here. Thank you for Boldly shining your light for us. Love you!

  56. What a blessing you are to so many!! I am so thankful for you….Happy Birthday…hope your day is filled with your favorite things…much love to you and your family!

  57. Happy Birthday Tracey. I still have the email you sent encouraging me 9 years ago!!! It was “The Sower” when I first started working as dean of students. You continue to inspire me and so many others. I pray that you have a wonderful birthday today. I am blessed by YOU, your husband, and your precious daughters. I am so thankful God allowed me to live in this time of life that I get to know you.

  58. Happy birthday Tracey. You are such an encouragement to me. I can see your faith and love for Christ even in the midst of hardship. Your life truly brings glory to our lord and savior.

  59. Dearest Mrs. Tracey,
Happy, happy birthday to you! You are such a blessing in my life and I just want to thank you for pouring into my life when I was in college. It meant more to me than you know! Thank you for setting such a wonderful example for me of what a Godly mother and wife looks like. God’s light continues to shine brightly through you! I love you!

  60. May the sparkle in your eye Mrs Tracey and Jesus in your heart always light your way as you find hidden treasures He has for you in these dark places.

And I’d like to wish you a very Happy happy happy birthday mrs Tracey!
Hope it’s a great day filled with love, grace & joy!

  61. Tracey you are an amazing woman of God! I hope you have a birthday that saturates you in His love! You are a blessing to me and to so many! You are a light. You are a very bright one and you bring Him glory! I love you and celebrate Gods gift if YOU today!

  62. My sweet friend! I just read your blog this morning and tears are trickling down my cheeks. I am not surprised by the timeliness of your words though. God has continually used your openness to Him to speak spot-on truths to me.
Moving, whether to a new place, new season, or new unknowns, can be so difficult. It can feel lonely. I have felt that. God’s love is steadfast. He will never leave us or forsake us. He will guide us. Simple truths yet profound.

Thank you for blessing me with your friendship and encouragement. Your words are treasured whether they are written on a notecard and passed across our bible study table or read on a blog from hundreds of miles away.

  63. Happy Birthday Mrs. Tracy! You are such an inspiration to all; with all that you have been given to deal with you still manage to keep your faith. Your strong spirit is such an example to all of us who know you and those who are just getting to know you. May God bless you on your special day.

  64. You are the light for so many. Happy Birthday !! Thank you for being a strong woman-mother – wife. Your smile is wonderful.

  65. I am reminded of Psalms 119:130

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Thank you for continuing to are pushing me right along. πŸ™‚

  66. I too am a lover of light. Give me sunshine, blue skies and the color yellow and I’m a happy girl. Recently I read something that changed my thinking about darkness: In the darkness is where some of God’s greatest work is completed. Think of seeds and plants in the winter months, resting and germinating for a glorious springtime, and especially of the darkness of a mother’s womb. God is good in darkness and in the light.

  67. Thank you Tracie, Interesting thought that I may be putting conditions on the darkness and the light in my life. Something to ponder….

    • Thank you Kay, sometimes I have no idea what direction post is gonna take πŸ™‚ I was surprised when God gently illuminated I was putting conditions on His darkness. Good to process through in prayer! twe
